More Johannesburg families are using marked cycling paths inside the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia and around Zoo Lake in Parkview for beginner-level rides that stay off main traffic arteries.
The shift comes as residents seek low-cost outdoor options during the July winter school holidays, when many households look for activities that keep children active without high equipment costs or travel outside the city.
City parks staff have added signage and widened sections of the existing 3.2-kilometre loop at the botanical gardens and the 2.8-kilometre perimeter track at Zoo Lake. Both sites sit inside fenced areas with regular security patrols and connect to nearby residential streets such as Thomas Bowler Avenue and Westcliff Drive.
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens loop starts near the main gate on Thomas Bowler Avenue and circles the dam before returning through shaded tree sections. The Zoo Lake circuit runs along the water’s edge and links to the adjacent Parkview sports fields, giving riders a flat 45-minute circuit that avoids steep gradients. Both routes are open daily from 6am and close at 6pm, with free entry for cyclists who arrive before 8am.
Local data from the City of Johannesburg’s parks department shows 1,240 recorded cycling entries across the two sites in June 2026, up from 870 the same month in 2025. Basic bike hire at the Emmarentia kiosk costs R60 for two hours on weekdays and R80 on weekends, with helmets included.
Parents planning a first outing are advised to start on a weekday morning when foot traffic is lighter. Riders should carry water, wear visible clothing and keep to the inner paths rather than the outer fence line. Netcare hospitals in the area, including the one in Parktown, operate a 24-hour trauma unit reachable within 15 minutes from either park in case of minor incidents. Beginners can also join the weekly Saturday morning group roll organised by the Emmarentia residents’ association, which meets at 7:30am at the botanical gardens gate and covers the loop at a steady 12km/h pace.
City officials expect the same routes to remain open through the rest of winter, with additional lighting checks scheduled for August along the Zoo Lake section.
