More than 400 runners turned out last Saturday at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens parkrun in Emmarentia, marking one of the largest weekly gatherings recorded this year on the city's northern side.

Interest in these free timed 5km runs has grown as residents seek reliable outdoor exercise options close to home amid rising gym costs and busy weekday schedules. Parkrun South Africa data shows Gauteng events logged a 12 percent rise in average attendance between January and June 2025, with Johannesburg venues accounting for a steady share of that growth. The format fits easily into weekend routines for families and solo participants alike.

Northern suburbs options

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens course starts at 8am every Saturday near the main entrance off Thomas Bowler Avenue. Runners follow a mix of paved paths and grass sections around the rose gardens and dams before finishing near the conservatory. A second strong option sits at Zoo Lake in Saxonwold, where the route loops the water's edge along Jan Smuts Avenue and finishes near the boathouse. Both sites provide ample parking and basic toilet facilities, and volunteers from the local parkrun committees manage timing and results each week.

Security remains a practical concern at all outdoor venues. Participants at both Emmarentia and Zoo Lake report that groups form naturally at the start line, and the events finish before 9am when foot traffic increases. Netcare 911 teams have run first-aid stations at the Botanical Gardens site on the first Saturday of each month since March 2025.

Getting started this weekend

New runners register once on the parkrun website and print or save their barcode before arriving. The events remain free, with no entry fees or equipment requirements beyond comfortable shoes. After the run, many participants meet at nearby cafes on Barry Hertzog Avenue for coffee. Those seeking variety can check the parkrun app for start times at other Johannesburg locations such as Delta Park on Republic Road. Regular attendance builds fitness quickly, but anyone with existing health conditions should speak first with a doctor at a local Netcare facility.
