Rosebank Johannesburg: Shopping, Art Galleries & the Best Restaurants
Rosebank is one of Johannesburg's most pleasant and walkable commercial districts — a northern suburb that has evolved into a genuine urban village with a vibrant mix of upscale retail, art galleries, craft markets, restaurants, and hotel options that make it one of the most convenient bases for visitors to the city. Unlike the fortress-like Sandton City mall complex to the north, Rosebank feels more open and street-level, with the Zone@Rosebank and The Zone shopping centres connected by open walkways and the famous weekly craft market operating in the open air.
The Rosebank Sunday Market (also operating on Saturdays) is one of Johannesburg's best — a large open-air gathering of craft vendors, food stalls, live music, and vintage clothing that draws a broad cross-section of Johannesburg society and provides one of the most convivial public spaces in a city not always known for them. The surrounding streets have an above-average concentration of art galleries, with Everard Read (one of Africa's most significant commercial galleries with a remarkable roster of established South African artists) and the Circa Gallery being the most significant anchor institutions. Several smaller galleries and studios operate in the converted houses of the residential streets behind the main commercial strip.
Rosebank's restaurant and cafe scene has developed significantly, with the The Zone's restaurant strip offering reliable choices across price points. The neighbourhood's hotel options — particularly the African Pride Melrose Arch and several boutique options — make it a comfortable base from which the rest of Johannesburg is accessible by the Gautrain (the high-speed rail connecting Rosebank to the airport in 15 minutes and to Sandton in 4 minutes).
