Kruger National Park from Johannesburg: Safari Planning Guide
Kruger National Park — South Africa's flagship game reserve and one of Africa's greatest Big Five destinations — is just 4-5 hours' drive from Johannesburg, making it the most accessible major safari in Africa. Over 2 million hectares of bushveld support lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo alongside 500 bird species.
Getting There
- Drive (4.5-5 hours) — N4 highway east to Mpumalanga, entering via the Numbi or Phabeni gates. Easiest with a rental car booked from OR Tambo Airport.
- Fly — 1-hour flight from Joburg to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) or Hoedspruit (HDS). Several airlines including FlySafair and SA Express.
Self-Drive vs Guided
Self-drive in SANParks camps (from R300/night per person in rest camps) — the most affordable option. You drive your own vehicle on tar and gravel roads. Animals are plentiful; patient early-morning drives (6-8am) yield the best sightings.
Private game reserves (Sabi Sand, Timbavati — adjoining Kruger, unfenced) — guided open-vehicle safaris, walking safaris, Big Five guaranteed. From $400-600/night full board. Leopard sightings near-guaranteed in Sabi Sand.
Best Time
Dry season (May-September) — best wildlife viewing as vegetation thins and animals congregate at water sources.
