Best Day Trips from Johannesburg

Johannesburg's position on the Highveld plateau in the centre of Gauteng province makes it an excellent base for day trips to some of southern Africa's most compelling attractions. The Pilanesberg Game Reserve — where the Big Five can be seen — lies just 2.5 hours northwest, making it the most accessible safari option from the city. The historic mining town of Cullinan, where the world's largest diamond was discovered, is just 45 minutes away.

Pretoria, South Africa's administrative capital and a city of jacaranda trees and fine architecture, is just 50 minutes north and worth a half-day or full-day visit for its Union Buildings, Voortrekker Monument, and excellent restaurant scene.
