Best Time to Visit Johannesburg
Johannesburg sits at 1,753 metres above sea level on the Highveld plateau, giving it a unique climate — warm, sunny, and relatively dry for most of the year, with afternoon thunderstorms common in the summer (October–April) that clear quickly and refresh the air. The city's elevation means even summer temperatures are moderate by African standards, rarely exceeding 30°C.
The dry winter months of May through August are generally considered the best time to visit — days are warm and sunny (15–22°C), nights are cold but clear, and the dry veld vegetation means superior game viewing at nearby reserves as animals gather at water sources. This period also aligns with South African school holidays in July, which increases activity and pricing. Spring (September–October) is spectacular, with the city's jacaranda trees in full purple bloom.
