The Maboneng Precinct, the Newtown cultural district and a thriving gallery scene signal a city confidently reinventing itself.

Maboneng Precinct

The most visible symbol of Johannesburg's regeneration — a formerly derelict warehouse district east of the CBD transformed into a creative hub. Arts on Main (galleries, food market every Sunday morning), Main Change (design shops, studios), boutique hotels and restaurants fill what was once an industrial wasteland. The Sunday Market (9am-4pm) is the cultural heartbeat of the precinct.

Key Museums & Galleries

• Apartheid Museum (Gold Reef City) — South Africa's most important museum. Seven years in construction, comprehensive and emotionally devastating in equal measure. Allow 3 hours minimum. R220 entry.
• Constitutional Hill (Braamfontein) — the Constitutional Court built on the Old Fort prison site where Gandhi and Mandela were once imprisoned. Free gallery in the court building.
• Zeitz MOCAA — Cape Town's is more famous, but Joburg has excellent private galleries: Goodman Gallery and Stevenson lead the contemporary art scene.
