Alexandra Township Johannesburg: History, Culture & Community Guide
Alexandra — known universally as Alex — is one of Johannesburg's most historically significant and culturally rich townships, a compact urban community that has produced an extraordinary number of South Africa's most prominent leaders, artists, and intellectuals. While Soweto receives most of the international attention, Alex offers an arguably more intimate and historically nuanced township experience just 10 kilometres from Sandton's towers.
Alex's history is inseparable from the freedom struggle. Nelson Mandela lived here in a boarding house at 46 7th Avenue in the 1940s, taking his first steps in Johannesburg as a young law clerk. OR Tambo, Walter Sisulu, and numerous other ANC leaders built the movement's grassroots networks in Alex's congested lanes. The Nelson Mandela House at 46 7th Avenue is now a heritage site with a small museum.
Today Alex is a living, breathing community of extraordinary energy — small businesses, street food vendors, football games, and community life proceed with remarkable resilience. Reputable township tour operators offer guided visits that connect visitors with community members, local businesses, and cultural practitioners rather than treating Alex as a spectacle. The tours support local guides and enterprises directly. Combine with lunch at a local shisa nyama (braai restaurant) for the full experience.
