More than 40 percent of adults in the city now follow a fixed 45-minute pre-bed sequence that excludes phones and includes dim lighting, according to a June 2026 survey by the University of the Witwatersrand.
The change matters because long commutes along the N1 and extended office hours in Sandton have pushed average bedtimes past midnight for many workers, cutting total sleep below the six-hour mark that the same study linked to higher next-day fatigue and poorer concentration.
Early-morning Parkrun groups at Zoo Lake in Parkview have started sharing these routines with members who finish their 5 km loops by 8 am and want to protect recovery time. Evening yoga classes at the Joburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, held three nights a week, now end with a guided breathing drill that participants say helps them reach deep sleep faster once they return home to Melville or Linden.
A 2025 trial run by Netcare’s sleep unit at Milpark Hospital tracked 180 patients and found that those who switched off screens at 9 pm and read a physical book for 20 minutes fell asleep 12 minutes sooner on average than those who kept devices nearby. Adding a 10-minute progressive muscle relaxation sequence after reading produced an extra 7-minute gain.
Participants who kept room lights below 20 lux and room temperature at 19 degrees Celsius reported fewer middle-of-the-night awakenings across the four-week period.
Residents can begin the routine at 21:00 by lowering household lights, leaving phones in another room and choosing a paper book or magazine. After 20 minutes they move to a seated or lying position for the muscle-tension exercise, finishing by 21:45. Those who want extra support can book a one-hour consultation at Netcare’s Rosebank sleep clinic for R850, which includes a personalised schedule adjusted for shift workers.
Within two weeks most people notice steadier morning energy and fewer caffeine top-ups by mid-afternoon, provided they keep the same start time every night including weekends.
