More Johannesburg locals are using free outdoor gyms and circuits at established parks this winter to stay active without paying monthly subscriptions.

Interest has grown because many households face tighter budgets after recent utility increases, pushing people toward public spaces that already host regular running groups and exercise meetups. The city's established outdoor culture, including weekend Parkrun events at multiple sites, gives residents easy access to structured activity without new costs.

Circuits at Joburg Botanical Gardens and Zoo Lake

The Joburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia features a marked fitness circuit with pull-up bars, parallel bars and step platforms along the main walking paths near the rose garden entrance. Runners and walkers from the nearby Delta Park area often combine the circuit with laps around the gardens before joining the weekly Parkrun start at 8am on Saturdays. At Zoo Lake in Parkview, a separate free circuit sits beside the northern shoreline path, equipped with resistance bands stations and bodyweight stations that opened for public use in early 2023.

These two sites sit within 15 minutes of each other by car and both remain open from sunrise to sunset with no entry fee. Local running clubs have mapped additional bodyweight routes that link the gardens to Zoo Lake via small side streets in Parkhurst, creating longer circuits for those who want variety.

Attendance figures and practical steps

Parkrun Johannesburg recorded 487 finishers across its four city routes on the first Saturday of July 2025, according to the official timing sheets posted on the Parkrun South Africa site. That figure reflects steady growth from 320 finishers recorded at the same events in July 2022. No equipment hire charges apply at either the botanical gardens or Zoo Lake circuits.

Anyone planning to use the sites should arrive before 7am on weekdays to secure parking near the Emmarentia or Parkview entrances and should inform a friend of their route. Runners are advised to stick to the lit paths after 5pm and to check the City of Johannesburg website for any temporary gate closures before heading out.
