Joburg's Best Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners
From Zoo Lake's shaded perimeter to the Cradle of Humankind's gravel trails, Johannesburg has more family-friendly riding than most residents realise.

The numbers are hard to ignore. Membership in the Johannesburg Cycling Club has grown by roughly 34 percent since 2023, and weekend mornings at Zoo Lake in Parkview now draw clusters of riders alongside the usual Parkrun crowd. Families with children on balance bikes, retirees on e-bikes, and nervous first-timers all sharing the same 2.4-kilometre lakeside loop — it is a scene that would have looked unusual here five years ago.
Winter is the reason this matters right now. July in Joburg delivers crisp, dry mornings with temperatures around 7°C at sunrise and a reliable climb to 18°C by midday — conditions that cyclists across Europe and North America would pay for. No mud, no rain, no humidity. For parents who have been meaning to get the family out on bikes since Christmas, the next six weeks represent the best riding window of the year.
Zoo Lake is the obvious entry point. The perimeter path around the lake in Emmarentia is flat, fully paved, and enclosed enough that young children on training wheels are not sharing tarmac with motor traffic. Cyclists can extend the ride south into the Johannesburg Botanical Garden, which offers an additional two kilometres of interior paths through rose gardens and tree collections. The gardens open at 06h00 daily and entry is free, though parking on weekends fills up fast — arrive before 08h00 to get a spot on Olifants Road.
For families ready to move beyond the lake, the Delta Park trail system in Victory Park provides a slightly more adventurous option. The park covers around 105 hectares and the gravel paths are wide enough for two riders side by side. No technical climbing, no loose rock sections. The City of Johannesburg's Recreation and Parks Department has maintained Delta Park as an unpowered-vehicle zone, which means no motorbikes and no cars — the thing parents most want to hear.
Northcliff Hill deserves a mention for older children and adult beginners who want a gentle elevation challenge without committing to a mountain bike trail. The circular road around the hill is approximately 3.5 kilometres, lightly trafficked on weekend mornings, and rewards riders with a skyline view across to Sandton that costs nothing beyond the effort of the pedal.
Helmet law in South Africa applies to all cyclists on public roads under the National Road Traffic Act, and Johannesburg Metro Police have been known to issue spot fines at key intersections in Rosebank and Sandton during peak weekend hours. A basic certified helmet from a retailer like Cycle Lab in Fourways runs from R499 upward. The store also runs a free beginner's clinic on the first Saturday of each month, typically held in the Fourways Mall parking area before trading hours begin — a practical option for anyone who has not ridden since childhood.
The Parkrun community, which operates at 17 Joburg venues including Emmarentia and Delta Park, does not officially sanction cycling events, but the culture of those Saturday 07h00 gatherings has seeded a broader outdoor fitness habit across the northern suburbs. Several informal cycling groups have emerged from those networks, advertising meetups on the Strava app under Johannesburg-based clubs. Connecting with one of those groups before venturing out solo is worth doing — local riders know which sections of William Nicol Drive and Beyers Naudé Drive to avoid entirely on a family outing.
Anyone with specific health considerations — joint problems, cardiovascular history, or children with developmental needs that affect balance — should check with a Netcare or Life Healthcare GP before starting a new riding programme. The activity is low-impact by road-sport standards, but a short consultation saves longer problems down the line.
The Joburg Cycling Club publishes a free downloadable route map covering 22 beginner and intermediate circuits across the city, updated as recently as March 2026 and available at joburgcycling.co.za. Print it, laminate it, clip it to your handlebars. Then go before winter runs out.
