The paved loop around Emmarentia Dam was buzzing with families on brightly-coloured bicycles this weekend, as the city’s renewed push for safe cycling gathers momentum. With school holidays in full swing, parents including Westdene resident Phindi Mahlangu have been looking for places their younger children can practice pedalling without the stress of heavy traffic.

This focus on safe, accessible outdoor activity isn’t just about fun. Johannesburg has seen a sharp uptick in recreational cycling since 2023, with both demand and fear rising in tandem: a 2025 SAPS brief cited a 19% rise in bike thefts citywide, creating anxiety for new cyclists. Organisers and officials are increasingly under pressure to provide secure, family-appropriate routes in a city famous for both its love of the outdoors and its safety challenges.

Best Spots: Emmarentia, Zoo Lake and Beyond

Emmarentia Botanical Gardens remains the gold standard for family cyclists. With wide, car-free tar paths looping around the lawns, parents like the Majolas of Melville favour this spot for its balance of open space, secure parking (R10 at main gate), and visibility. The perimeter track – just over 2km if taken in a full circuit – is manageable even for the training wheels set.

Nearby Zoo Lake offers another option: the footpath circling the lake is flat and mostly shaded, ideal for young riders, tricycle users, or those pushing prams alongside. Rangers patrol the area at weekends, and since the implementation of the City Parks watch programme in February, incident numbers around the Zoo Lake cycle track have fallen by 13% according to City of Johannesburg’s Safety Division.

The Braamfontein Spruit Trail stretches further afield, starting from Delta Park in Craighall Park and winding toward Paulshof. While some sections can be bumpy after rain, the Delta Park segment is gently sloped and shaded by mature trees, attracting both beginner adults and “mom and tot” cycling meetups on Saturdays. The Johannesburg Urban Cyclists Association has recently marked key sections with clear family-friendly signage, and they offer volunteer-led group rides (free, donations encouraged) from the Delta Cafe every second Sunday at 9am.

Riding Safer in the City

Recent figures from the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport show that, as of May 2026, nearly 800,000 residents have taken up cycling at least once a month, compared to 520,000 in 2018. However, nearly three-quarters of respondents in a Joburg Streets survey cited “lack of safe routes” as their main barrier to cycling more often. Helmets and bike locks are now ubiquitous in sporting goods shops around Rosebank Mall, with kids’ helmets retailing from R200 and entry-level bikes for beginners starting at R1800 at outlets like Cycle Lab Fourways.

Plans are on the table for expanded greenway routes linking Linden and Sandton, but for now, experts recommend choosing parks or supervised community events for less-experienced riders. The Johannesburg Parkrun group has even hosted beginner cycling mornings in conjunction with local shops to encourage skills and confidence for all ages. Details of these events are regularly posted on their Facebook page and the @JoburgCylists social feed.

For parents and new cyclists, the advice is simple: stick to well-patrolled areas during daylight, double lock your bike, and use visible safety gear. A little planning goes a long way – and there’s no shortage of welcoming, leafy corners in the city to enjoy the freedom of two wheels, safely. For route suggestions, community ride times, and local cycling safety tips, the Johannesburg Urban Cyclists Association website and City Parks listings remain the most reliable starting points.
