A City of Johannesburg report released this week recorded 187,000 registered participants across municipal sports facilities in the 2025-2026 financial year, up 22 percent from the prior period.
The increase arrives as residents face higher living costs and limited access to private gyms charging R650 monthly fees, pushing more people toward free or low-cost public options in neighbourhoods such as Yeoville and Randburg.
Orlando Stadium in Soweto logged 34,000 unique users last year through its weekly running clubs and netball leagues, while the Ellis Park complex near Doornfontein recorded 28,500 participants in its outdoor boot-camp sessions and five-a-side pitches. Both venues introduced extended evening hours in March 2025 after resident petitions highlighted safety concerns along Joe Slovo Drive and Staib Street.
These numbers come from attendance logs kept by the Johannesburg Recreation and Sport Directorate, which also tracks entry at 47 smaller parks and community halls.
Participation data shows the largest gains among adults aged 30 to 45, with women comprising 58 percent of new registrations at sites that added women-only hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Average daily attendance at the Randburg Sports Complex reached 1,240 users in June, compared with 890 the same month in 2024.
City planners now plan to add lighting at three more fields in Alexandra by December and expand the existing R25-per-session coached programmes at Zoo Lake to accommodate the demand.
Residents can check the City of Johannesburg website for updated schedules or visit the main office at 158 Civic Boulevard to register for the next quarter.
